Introduction to AR Coatings

When AR Coatings first gained strength in the USA, they were made of softer materials. Softer metals worked well for adhesion on non-hard coated plastics. But the trade-off was that lenses scratched quite easily.

As time went on, it was realized that lenses should be hard coated to provide better scratch resistance. This also helped provide a better foundation for the AR stack. It was an advancement, but still the AR coatings were made with soft materials.

Quantum was one of the first companies to switch to Zirconium based processes, which make much stronger, more scratch resistant coatings. This, in correlation with using hard coated lenses, makes a much more scratch resistant product, one that will last the life of the consumer's prescription.

Why UVAR Is Important

As the ophthalmic industry grows in its understanding and knowledge of the damaging effects caused by UV and HEV (High Energy Visible light), Quantum Innovations continues to research and develop AR coating solutions to provide protection from some of the most dangerous eye maladies associated with these dangerous rays.

While there is much discussion surround the impact of UV, HEV is frequently excluded from the conversation. As the name suggests, HEV radiation, which is sometimes referred to as "blue light", is visible light, whereas UV is not. Although HEV rays have lower energy than UV rays, HEV radiation penetrates deeply into the eye and can cause damage to the retina.
